Understanding Grief and Loss

Causes of grief

Grief is an intense emotion and a natural reaction to loss.  Loss can be experienced by losing a loved one, the loss of a relationship, job, home or a change in personal circumstances.  Grief is a process of coming to terms with what has been lost however this may seem impossible.

To grieve is normal

Initially grief can be felt as disbelief, shock, numbness, sadness, anger and guilt.  These feelings can be overwhelming and at times make it impossible to function.  Everyone experiences and reacts to grief differently.  There is no right or wrong way to grieve or timeline on how long you will be grieving for.  Grief is an experience that cannot be ignored or numbed away with drugs, alcohol or other coping mechanisms.  Grief should be acknowledged and worked through, I believe that you cannot go over, under or around grief, the only way is to go through it.  This process is difficult and can feel like it's impossible to navigate alone.

Grief is lonely

Coping with grief can be hard work and we often feel reluctant to ask for help as we often struggle to find someone who truly understands what we're going through.
